Diabetes - Condition in which a person has high blood sugar (hyperglycemia), because the body doesn’t produce enough insulin, or because cells don’t respond to the insulin that is produced. About 40 percent of all men who have type 2 diabetes also have sleep apnea, according to research by Daniel Einhorn, the director of the Sharp Diabetes Treatment and Research Center in San Diego.
Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS) - part of the spectrum of obstructive sleep-related breathing disorders in which repetitive increases in resistance to airflow in the upper airway lead to brief arousals and daytime fatigue. Apneas and hypopneas (see RDI) may be totally absent. Blood oxygen levels can be in the normal range.
Hypertension - High blood pressure.
Gastroesphageal Reflux Disease (GERD) - flow of stomach acid upwards into the esophagus that can cause arousals and disrupt sleep.
Narcolepsy - sleep disorder characterized by excessive sleepiness, cataplexy, sleep paralysis, hypnogogic hallucinations, and an abnormal tendency to pass directly from wakefulness into REM sleep.
Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) - sleep disorder characterized by a deep creeping, or crawling sensation in the legs that tends to occur when an individual is not moving. There is an almost irresistible urge to move the legs; the sensations are relieved by movement.
Weight gain - An increase in body weight including muscle mass, fat, and fluids.
Cardiovascular Disease - The class of diseases that involve the heart or blood vessels. By the time that heart problems are detected, the underlying cause (atherosclerosis) is commonly advanced, having progressed untreated for many years. Atherosclerosis must be prevented by modifying the risks, such as healthy eating, health sleep, exercise and avoidance of smoking.
Second Hand Snoring - Research has shown that people who sleep next to a snorer have higher levels of fatigue and sleepiness, have more pain complaints, and are at higher risk for hearing loss.
Impotence - Erectile Dysfunction.
